There are three types of Lhosar, Tola Lhosar, Sonam Lhosar and Galbo Lhosar, and each year Lhosar is celebrated on a different date. On Sonam Lhosar, Nepal government gives a public holiday.

Sonam Lhosar is the year of the wooden horse. Lhosar is celebrated by visiting monasteries and stupas where special rituals are performed with mask dances to ward off evil spirits. On the other hand, the Tamang community keeps the house and surroundings clean to welcome the gods and goddesses.

Pork, chicken, meat, fish and sweet desert are consumed in Sonam Lhosar. Apart from this, traditional songs of Tamang are played on tamang cello and damfu (musical instrument).
